The Pickleball Reset – Part 1

After teaching more than a thousand people how to play pickleball, I thought I understood why the sport was growing so quickly. I was wrong. What I discovered was something much bigger than a game. Pickleball is helping people reconnect with movement, friendship, purpose and healthier living. In Part 1 of The Pickleball Reset, I explore why this may be one of the most important community movements taking place today—and why governments should begin paying much closer attention.

Pickleball Is More Than a Game. It's a Reset.

Over the past five or six years, I've had the privilege of teaching more than a thousand people how to play pickleball.

When I first discovered the game, getting into it wasn't easy. There weren't enough courts, clubs, or organized opportunities to play. In many ways, that's still true today.

Eventually, I found my way in.

Not long after that, I started coaching.

Not because I had always wanted to become a coach.

Not because I was looking for a side business.

I simply saw something happening.

More and more people wanted to learn the game, but there weren't enough people willing to help them get started.

So I decided to do something about it.

At first, I thought I was simply teaching a sport.

Looking back now, I realize I was witnessing something much bigger.

In many ways, I experienced it myself before I ever recognized it in others.

I fell in love with the game and wanted other people to experience what I had discovered.

What happened next surprised me.

I wasn't just teaching people how to dink, volley, or keep score.

I was watching people reconnect with their lives.

Some came because they wanted exercise.

Some came because a friend invited them.

Some had recently retired.

Others were going through difficult periods in their lives and simply wanted a reason to get out of the house.

Many arrived knowing absolutely nobody.

As I got to know them, many began sharing their stories.

Some told me how much happier they had become.

Others spoke about overcoming loneliness after losing a spouse or moving into a new community.

Some talked about finding purpose again after retirement.

To be honest, those conversations made me uncomfortable at first.

I didn't think I was changing lives.

I was just introducing people to a game I loved.

Eventually, I realized something important.

This was no longer about me.

It was about them.

And without realizing it, I had found a mission that continues to inspire me today.

Very few people realized that picking up a paddle would change far more than their ability to play pickleball.

It Starts With a Paddle...

But It Rarely Ends There.

I've watched complete strangers become lifelong friends.

I've watched husbands and wives discover an activity they genuinely enjoy doing together.

I've watched parents, children, and grandparents share a court—something I've rarely seen in any other sport I've played.

I've watched confidence return to people who hadn't exercised in years.

I've watched laughter replace loneliness.

I've watched people rediscover purpose simply because they knew their friends would be waiting for them at the courts.

For a few hours...

Politics disappears.

Financial worries disappear.

Work stress disappears.

Life slows down.

The only thing that matters is the next rally.

That mental reset is incredibly powerful.

But over the past year, I've begun noticing something else.

The Game Starts Changing People

Eventually, many players begin asking the same question.

"How do I keep playing longer?"

They don't want to stop.

They want more energy.

They want to recover faster.

They want fewer injuries.

They want to stay competitive.

Without even realizing it, pickleball often becomes the motivation for making healthier choices.

People begin paying more attention to what they eat.

They start walking more.

They begin stretching.

Some take up strength training.

Many start prioritizing sleep because they realize how important recovery has become.

The game becomes much more than recreation.

It becomes motivation.

And that's when I realized something important.

Maybe We've Been Looking at Health Backwards

For decades, much of our healthcare conversation has focused on treating illness after it appears.

That work is incredibly important.

But perhaps we haven't spent enough time asking another question.

How do we help people stay healthier in the first place?

Sometimes the answer isn't another prescription.

Sometimes it's helping people discover something they genuinely love doing.

Something that gets them moving.

Something that creates friendships.

Something that reduces loneliness.

Something that gives them purpose.

For hundreds of thousands of people—and eventually millions—I believe pickleball is becoming exactly that.

This Is Bigger Than Pickleball

This is where I believe an important conversation needs to begin.

Municipal leaders.

Provincial governments.

Federal governments.

Healthcare organizations.

Community planners.

Recreation professionals.

They all need to understand what is quietly unfolding across North America.

People aren't simply asking for more pickleball courts.

They're building healthier habits.

They're building friendships.

They're building stronger communities.

They're discovering that movement, social connection, purpose, and fun work together in ways we've often underestimated.

If governments are serious about healthier communities...

Reducing social isolation...

Encouraging active aging...

And improving quality of life...

Then pickleball deserves far more attention than it currently receives.

Not because it's trendy.

But because it's producing outcomes that extend far beyond the court.

A Personal Journey

This realization has changed me as well.

Over the past year, my own focus has shifted.

I've become much more intentional about my health.

My nutrition.

My recovery.

My sleep.

My strength.

My mindset.

Not because someone told me I had to.

Because I want to continue doing something I love for many years to come.

That journey is far from over.

In many ways...

It's just beginning.

The Beginning of a Bigger Conversation

This article is the first in a new series I'm calling The Pickleball Reset.

Over the coming weeks, I'll share what I've learned—not only as a coach and club builder, but also as someone who has witnessed firsthand the remarkable impact this game can have on people's lives.

We'll explore healthier aging.

Recovery.

Community.

Purpose.

And why I believe pickleball may become one of the most important public health opportunities of our generation.

More importantly, I'll ask a question that I believe governments, healthcare professionals, and community leaders should begin asking themselves.

What if pickleball isn't simply one of the fastest-growing sports in North America?

What if it's one of the most effective community health movements we've seen in decades?

That's a conversation worth having.

And I believe we're only beginning to understand its potential.
