Pickleball Ball Intelligence

Not All Pickleballs Play the Same

The pickleball you choose can materially affect speed, bounce, pop, flight, durability and the overall playing experience.

But choosing the right ball is more complicated than simply asking whether you are playing indoors or outdoors.

Pickleball Partners Ball Intelligence is an evolving, evidence-based resource examining how pickleballs actually perform, what they cost, where they are being used, and which characteristics matter most to players, clubs and commercial facilities.

Indoor vs. Outdoor? We Think There's a Better Question.

Pickleballs have traditionally been classified as either indoor or outdoor balls.

But today's pickleball environment has changed.

Dedicated indoor pickleball facilities commonly have acrylic or cushioned-acrylic hardcourt surfaces similar to outdoor pickleball and tennis courts. On these courts, players frequently use 38-, 40- and even 48-hole hardcourt-style balls.

Traditional 26-hole balls remain common in school gyms, recreation centres and multipurpose facilities.

The better question may be:

What ball is best for the surface and playing environment?

Ball selection should consider:

Court Surface • Playing Environment • Hole Design • Temperature • Performance • Durability • Visibility • Competitive Requirements • Cost

That is the framework behind Pickleball Partners Ball Intelligence.

What We're Researching

BALL PERFORMANCE

How different balls compare in:

Speed • Bounce • Pop • Spin • Flight • Feel • Hardness

DURABILITY & ACCEPTABLE PLAYING LIFE

A pickleball doesn't have to crack to be worn out.

Balls can soften, become rougher, lose pop, change bounce characteristics or go out of round long before they physically fail.

That's why we distinguish between:

Crack Resistance

Shape Retention

Softening

Bounce Retention

Surface Wear

Acceptable Playing Life

Crack resistance ≠ acceptable playing life.

26, 38, 40 OR 48 HOLES?

Why do pickleballs have different numbers and patterns of holes?

We're examining how hole design interacts with construction, aerodynamics, speed, surface and playing environment—and why simply calling balls "indoor" and "outdoor" may no longer adequately describe how they're actually used.

Ball Colour & Visibility

Yellow may be the dominant pickleball colour, but it isn't necessarily the easiest colour to see in every facility.

Visibility can be affected by:

Court Colour • Wall Colour • Background Contrast • Lighting • Glare • Ceiling • Visual Clutter • Player Preference

Quality dedicated indoor facilities with good lighting and contrasting surfaces often work extremely well with bright yellow balls.

School gyms, arenas and converted facilities can be very different.

The best ball colour is therefore not necessarily universal.

The best colour is the one that creates the strongest visibility in the actual playing environment.

Canadian Ball Intelligence

Canada presents some unique pickleball-ball challenges.

What Are Players and Facilities Actually Using?

Manufacturer recommendations tell us what a ball was designed for.

We also want to know what happens in the real world.

Pickleball Partners is documenting ball usage at:

Commercial Pickleball Facilities

Community Clubs

Municipal Facilities

School Gyms

Tournaments

Professional Tours

DUPR Events

Canadian and U.S. Facilities

Over time, this will allow us to identify actual ball-use patterns by surface, facility type, geography and level of play.

What Ball Does Your Facility Use?

Help Us Build the Pickleball Ball Intelligence Database

Do you operate or play regularly at a pickleball club or facility?

We'd like to know:

Facility or Club Name

City / Province / State

Indoor or Outdoor

Court Surface

Ball Brand & Model

Ball Colour

Why You Use It

What You Like or Dislike About It

Your observations can help us better understand how pickleballs are actually being used across Canada and the United States.

Pickleball Ball Pricing Intelligence

The price printed on a three-pack doesn't necessarily tell you what a ball really costs.

Pickleball Partners tracks pricing in both:

🇨🇦 Canadian Dollars

🇺🇸 U.S. Dollars

Our research includes:

Amazon Canada • Amazon U.S. • Canadian Pickleball Retailers • Volume Pricing • Manufacturer Pricing • Commercial/Bulk Pricing

Ultimately, the more important question may not be:

What does the ball cost?

but:

What does each hour of acceptable play cost?

As sufficient durability evidence becomes available, we intend to investigate Cost Per Acceptable Playing Hour for commercial facilities and clubs.

Our Evidence Standard

Not every claim about pickleball equipment deserves equal weight.

Pickleball Partners distinguishes between:

✓ VERIFIED FACT

Supported by authoritative documentation.

✓ INDEPENDENT TESTING

Measured by a credible independent source.

◉ OPERATOR OBSERVATION

Real-world experience reported by clubs or facility operators.

◉ PLAYER EXPERIENCE

Useful player feedback that has not necessarily been independently measured.

△ MANUFACTURER CLAIM

Information supplied by the company making the product.

? INSUFFICIENT EVIDENCE

Where reliable information doesn't exist yet, we'll say so.

We would rather identify an unknown than manufacture an answer.

Independent Research. Practical Pickleball Intelligence.

Pickleball Partners sells pickleball equipment, but our Ball Intelligence research is not limited to the products we sell.

We research competing products, different technologies and different approaches because the objective is to help players, clubs and facility operators make better-informed decisions.

As the sport evolves, so will this database.
